What is a Biscuit Dowel?

A biscuit dowel is a thin, oval-shaped piece of wood made from compressed wood shavings, usually beech. When glued into precisely cut slots by a biscuit cutter, the moisture from the glue causes the biscuit to swell and the joint becomes solid.

What Size Biscuit to Use?

As a general rule, try to use the largest possible biscuit that will provide the greatest strength to the joint. In most cases, No: 20 (24 mm x 58 mm) biscuits in most cases, but when working on narrower materials, you can also use smaller biscuits where appropriate.

End to End Connections

The most common form of biscuit joint is the end-to-end joint. This is usually used for gluing the tops of various widths of boards of the same thickness, where the biscuit is used along the planed long edges of the boards. To glue the tops of various boards, place the boards side by side, with the end of each board opposite the other board. This will help to stabilize the tops of the boards when they contract or expand. Once the boards are in the right positions, use a pencil to draw a connecting mark every 10-15 cm. These will be the center lines of the biscuit slots.

Next, separate the boards and adjust your biscuit dowel to the appropriate size for the biscuit. For end-to-end connections, you will most likely need a large No: 20 (24 mm x 58 mm) size. Place the guide wire on the wood and mark the cutting guide with a pencil. With the wire in place, start the saw and with the motor at full power, plunge the blade into the wood and go all the way through. Then withdraw the blade completely and repeat the same process at the next mark.

Once all the slots have been cut, put a small amount of glue evenly in the slots on one edge and place the biscuits. Then apply a similar amount of glue to the opposite slots on the other edge and join the two boards together. You will want to quickly glue each edge of the surface sections and then clamp the whole assembly. Tighten the clamps so that all gaps are completely closed, but be careful not to tighten so hard that any glue at the joints leaks out. If glue leaks out of any of the joints, you should wipe it off immediately so that it does not affect the coating later.
